Description:

Small silver pocket compass which belonged to Selim Hishmeh, whose name is engraved on the back. Hishmeh was Henry Morton Stanley's guide and interpreter when he found Livingstone in 1871. Able to speak English, Swahili and Arabic, Hishmeh and was one of 200 men employed by Stanley during his expedition. Hishmeh later moved to Scotland where he qualified as a medical doctor and a master stonemason.
